Published figures for the size of ChatGPT's plugin directory range from 300 to 1,624 for the same point in mid-2026. That is not sloppy reporting — the figures count different things. OpenAI publishes no running count, no directory API, and no log of additions or removals, so every number in circulation is someone else's tally of whatever they chose to include. This page shows all of them with what each one counts.
Denominator is 330 — community tally of MCP-backed integrations, the population we review. Against every directory listing (1,624, including skills-only packages we deliberately do not score) coverage is 7.6%. Both are honest; they answer different questions. The numerator is exact either way: 67 of our 123 entries rest on a hands-on test or a primary source, and 48 are openly marked as needing verification.

Why nobody can tell you the exact number
There are two kinds of figure in circulation and they are not the same thing. At launch, the directory was a named list — seven partners, countable from OpenAI's own announcement. Once third-party submissions opened in December 2025, that stopped being possible from outside. Every number since is press reporting, which is directional and worth citing, but is not an official statistic and should not be quoted as one.
The July 2026 migration made counting harder still. A directory listing is now a plugin, and a plugin can be a skills-only package of instructions or a full MCP-backed integration connected to a real service. Those are different products sharing one shelf, so "300 plugins" describes a mixed population. It is why our coverage figure has a smaller numerator than you might expect: we review the MCP-backed ones and say so, rather than inflating the count with listings our criteria cannot meaningfully score.
So every count on this page carries a basis label — Verified count when it is countable from a primary source, and Reported estimate when it comes from press. If you cite one number from this page, cite the label with it.

A community tally proves partly unverifiable
Working through the 1,624-entry community list as a lead file, we found we could not verify its listing URLs at all — chatgpt.com returns an identical block for a real listing and a fabricated one, so an entry's app ID is not checkable from outside. Worse for the count: the list credits Eventbrite with a listing and an app ID, while trade coverage states Eventbrite had shipped no official ChatGPT app as of July 2026. One contradiction does not invalidate a list, but it does establish that the widely-quoted figure includes entries that do not hold up, and that no third-party tally can currently be audited. Treat any number above the low hundreds as an upper bound.

Published counts diverge by 5x
A community-maintained directory reported 330 Apps SDK / MCP integrations and 1,624 total listings across 44 categories — on the same day, in the same document. Press coverage in the same period put the figure near 300. Nothing is contradictory once you read what each number counts: service-backed integrations versus every listing. But it does mean there is no such thing as "the" directory size, and a figure quoted without its population is not a fact about the directory.

App directory becomes the Plugin directory
OpenAI migrated the App directory to the Plugin directory. A plugin is the installable package — it can contain skills, an MCP server, or both — and ChatGPT and Codex now share one universal directory. Existing app connections kept working. This changed what a directory listing is, which is why a single count now covers two different product shapes.

Roughly 300 integrations, and a discovery problem
Six months after launch, reporting put the directory at around 300 integrations — while partner companies said publicly that users struggled to find them and that the surface had delivered little traffic. Both halves of that matter: the catalog grew roughly forty-fold, and growth alone did not produce discovery.

OpenAI introduced apps running inside ChatGPT with seven pilot partners: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. Rolled out to logged-in users outside the EU across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. This is the only point in the timeline where the directory's size is exactly knowable — it was a named list.
