Two patterns stand out this quarter. First, productivity and business apps dominate the directory by count — partner companies with existing SaaS audiences ship apps first, and they cluster in the same categories where those audiences already live. Second, the score distribution is heavier in the 70–89 band than in the 90s — most apps work, but few hit the bar of being a clearly best-in- class experience inside a conversation. The headroom is real, and developers who invest in tool descriptions, scope minimality, and first-call success — see our ASO guide — have a clear path up.

Verification status

Verification means we've hands-on confirmed the app behaves the way the listing claims, with at least one realistic test prompt sequence per app.

9
Verified

16% of the directory has full hands-on verification.

39
Needs verification

Tracked in the directory; awaiting our re-test.

1
Unavailable

Listed with an honest "not currently available" notice for users searching the brand.

Verification is rate-limited by editorial bandwidth, not by app quality. Apps marked "Needs verification" are not lower-quality — they're in our retest queue. The verified share grows each week.

Methodology

Every app in the dataset has been individually evaluated against a seven-criterion editorial rubric — usefulness, reliability, ease of use, setup, in-chat experience, privacy clarity, and value. Each criterion is scored 0–100; the headline editorial score is the weighted mean. Full weights and the retest cadence are published on the methodology page. The raw dataset is downloadable at /data (JSON + CSV) under CC-BY-4.0.

This report is updated quarterly. For the live numbers between reports, the directory at /best-chatgpt-apps recomputes on every publish, and the changelog tracks every status change.

Frequently asked questions

What data is in this ChatGPT apps report?
The data is derived from the editorial directory on ChatGPTAppsRank — every app we have hands-on tested, scored across seven criteria, and assigned a verification status. The report covers category distribution, score distribution, free vs paid breakdown, and verification coverage as of the publication date.
How is this different from OpenAI's own app stats?
OpenAI does not publish aggregate ranking or scoring data for the apps directory. This report is independent editorial analysis — the apps are partner-shipped, but the scoring, categorization, and verification are ours. It's the only public dataset that scores ChatGPT apps on a consistent rubric.
Can I cite this State of ChatGPT Apps report?
Yes. Please link back to this page and note the publication date. We update the report quarterly; the most recent edition supersedes earlier ones. For the underlying raw data, see the public dataset at /data.
How often is the data refreshed?
Headline aggregates on this page recompute from the current dataset on every build, so the numbers track the live directory. We publish a dated narrative report each quarter that snapshots the state at that point in time.
