ChatGPT Extensions
"ChatGPT extensions" is ambiguous. Most often, people mean third-party Chrome (or Edge / Firefox) browser extensions that modify the ChatGPT web interface. Less often, they mean the official ChatGPT apps surface — which is not a browser extension at all. The two are completely different things.
Browser extensions that augment ChatGPT
The most common meaning. These are Chrome / Edge / Firefox extensions you install in your browser to change how the ChatGPT web app behaves — adding prompt libraries, exporting conversations, formatting responses differently, integrating other AI services, and so on. They run in your browser, not inside ChatGPT itself. OpenAI does not vet them, the quality varies wildly, and many have privacy implications because they can read everything in your ChatGPT session.
Why ChatGPT apps are sometimes called 'extensions'
Less commonly, people use 'extensions' to describe what OpenAI officially calls apps — the partner integrations that run inside ChatGPT. This usage is technically wrong but understandable, because plugins (the predecessor) were sometimes informally called 'extensions' too. If someone says 'ChatGPT extensions for Notion' or 'ChatGPT extensions for Canva', they almost certainly mean the official Notion or Canva apps inside ChatGPT.
Which one do you actually want?
If you want to add Notion, Canva, Wolfram, Spotify, or any well-known service to your ChatGPT conversations — you want the apps surface, not a browser extension. Apps live inside ChatGPT, are partner-vetted, and have proper permission models. If you want to modify the ChatGPT web interface itself (prompt libraries, export tools, theme changes), that's a browser extension question and not the focus of this site.
Privacy note on browser extensions
Browser extensions that interact with ChatGPT can read everything you do in ChatGPT — prompts, responses, conversations, attached files. Treat them with the same caution as any browser extension that asks for read access to web content. Many are unsupported side projects; the long tail is risky.
